Masonry Wall Failure & Repair

During a structural inspection of the house earlier this year, it was discovered that the masonry wall on the primary bedroom end of the house was failing. The CMU had not been grouted or reinforced. Water infiltrated the block and the footing causing the footing to rotate and the blocks to break and pop out. Architect and Liljestrand Foundation board member Joe Ferraro worked with structural engineer Ken Hayashida, contractor Jim Keller to develop a permanent stabilization plan of internal bracing using angle iron and Hilti fasteners.

Further investigation determined the water infiltration to be coming from a flex drain line next to the house. Once the drain line was replaced with new ABS pipe, Armstrong Builders were able to complete the stabilization work in one day.
