Survival Through Design

We are excited to invite you to join us for an evening of conversation with Dr. Raymond Neutra. In this talk, named after his father’s book, he will trace his father Richard Neutra’s extraordinary career and share how the Institute he founded in 1962 continues to nurture his vision of design as a vital force for human and environmental well-being.

Inspired by his architect father’s landmark 1954 book Survival Through Design, Dr. Raymond Richard Neutra pursued a path in medicine and environmental epidemiology, teaching at Harvard and UCLA before leading a research division at the California Department of Public Health. In 2019, after his architect brother, Dion Neutra, made a generous gift to the Institute for Survival Through Design, Dr. Neutra stepped in as president of its small but energetic board. Under his thoughtful leadership, the Institute has continued to champion the Neutra legacy- promoting responsible, human-centered design and supporting designers, researchers, and developers committed to serving both people and the planet.

This event is 21 and over. Snacks and refreshments will be served. All proceeds benefit the preservation of Liljestrand House.

This home serves as more than inspiration. This magnificent work changed the way I think about my field, and I will be sure to visit again; as a student, volunteer, and as a professional.
