Droughts, Drops & Decades: Settlement Issues

October 20, 2025 | Preservation Projects

Keeping the House Strong Through Droughts, Drops & Decades

Looking ahead, our 2026 preservation goals focus on critical infrastructure with a $60,000 fundraising target to address:

  • Serious Settling Issues: Parts of the house have recently experienced structural settling that must be addressed as soon as possible to avoid long-term damage. These issues have been exacerbated by the drought Oahu has experienced this year.
  • Water System Upgrades: We plan to install a new catchment tank and modernize our water system to ensure year-round sustainability.
  • Protecting Interiors: Installing UV and impact-resistant film on the original glazing will help protect the windows from environmental damage and will help protect the interiors of the house from further UV damage.

These efforts are crucial to fulfilling our mission and keeping Liljestrand House standing for generations to come. As a small and nonprofit, we rely on the generosity of visitors and donors to preserve and share the story of Liljestrand House.

Please consider making a gift to support our 2026 preservation goals!

Photos: Areas of the house affected by settling. Some of these issues have happened very slowly over the years. Some have happened more recently, due in part to drought conditions on Oahu.

This home serves as more than inspiration. This magnificent work changed the way I think about my field, and I will be sure to visit again; as a student, volunteer, and as a professional.
