Hiki`e Upholstery, Pillows & Cushion Foam
The time finally came to replace the original 1950s upholstery on the hikie`e (large built-in lounge couch) in the downstairs playroom. The throw pillows on the hiki`e as well as the throw pillows in the upstairs living room were also threadbare, faded and in need of new fabric. And the foam cushions on the pair of Shield chairs in the living room were disintegrating and in need of replacement.
While it wasn’t possible to replicate the upholstery and pillow fabrics exactly, we did our best to capture the spirit and color schemes of the originals. Thank you to Jamie Jackson Design and Judie Malmgren for their expertise and for helping us source the fabrics. VRS Upholstery completed the upholstery work on the hiki`e. The new pillows were completed by Island Awning Shop.
Thanks to architect and Liljestrand Advisory Board member Graham Hart and a village of helpers and donors, we were able to raise the funds for this project and recently completed all of the updates.
Graham gave a special fundraising presentation on May 10, 2024, Rediscovering Hawai`i’s Modern Gems, followed by a sunset pau hana, beverages and pupu. The evening also featured a drawing of special prizes for attendees and each guest received a copy of Screen Blocks in Hawai`i: Letting the Trade Winds Flow. All proceeds from the evening went to support the project.
Special thanks to everyone who purchased tickets and attended our fundraiser. Extra special mahalo to Kaimana Beach Hotel, Goodlamp Co., Docomomo Hawaii and FLUX Hawaii for generously supporting our program. And finally, a great big thank you to Graham Hart and Kristine Pontecha, for all of your work in making our fundraiser and preservation project a success!
