Experiences, reflections, and lessons learned
Born and raised in Honolulu, Sid Char has had a long and varied career as an architect. A Saint Louis High School alumnus, he graduated from University of Southern California with a degree in architecture, and followed with serving in the U.S. Navy as an engineering officer on an aircraft carrier, USS Oriskany CVA34, then began his Architectural career in 1971 with Naramore Bain Brady and Johanson (NBBJ) where he worked on the Municipal Office Building, now the Fasi Municipal Building, Harbor Square and the Hilo Medical Clinic. Sid also worked with Alfred A Yee Associates and in 1978, joined Wimberly Whisenand Allison Tong & Goo (WWATG) where he took on projects in progress including Kahala View Estates, Kona Condominiums and Kahilu Theatre. Sid assumed the role of Managing Principal for WATG’s Honolulu office in 1985. Some of his favorite projects while at WATG were Hawaii projects, Four Seasons Wailea, Hapuna Beach Prince Resort and First Hawaiian Bank for Maite, Guam, and International Projects, Palace of the Golden Horses in Selangor, Malaysia and Grand Hyatt Bali.
Sid retired from WATG in 2009 and currently works as a Consultant for WCIT, Architecture.
