Deck Progress

It’s been a busy six weeks!

A masonry wall under the deck had to be demolished before the original steel and old frame could be dismantled. A new footing was poured and the wall will be rebuilt after the scaffolding comes down.

The framing is mostly complete.  The seat brackets are in progress.  Next up is the decking.

We are incredibly fortunate to have so much support on this project. It would not have been possible without all of our “Deck Hands” who contributed to our fundraising campaign in 2021. Dean Sakamoto Architects / SHADE Institute drafted the as-built plans and together with structural engineer Ken Hayashida and architect Joe Ferraro, developed the plans for the steel work and framing, all on a volunteer basis. RCM Construction is generously donating the materials and labor for the masonry part of the project.  Joe Uno of J. Uno & Associates is providing project management services. And Armstrong Builders is generously donating all of the carpentry and coordination of the project.

So incredibly refreshing to see a residence unmolested by unsympathetic ownership. The personal touches, stories and tales from the last 67 years provide an amazing tapestry from which we can appreciate this architectural masterpiece. May the preservation of this house inspire not only its’ preservation but also that of other modernist examples in Hawai`i. Thank you.
