Building Our Collective Memory – The House / Museum

The modern house has been the site for great experiments and invaluable exploration in new ways of living. The House / Museums exist in different forms around the world. Liljestrand House has transformed from a single family house to a new House / Museum. It is amongst a growing number of global house museums that provide visitors with a deeper understanding of the radical types of spatial innovations that have been explored through the house in the modernist period.

Elke Krasny is a curator, cultural theorist and writer. She is a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna Austria. In her curatorial practice she works at the intersection of art, architecture, education, landscape, spatial politics and urbanism. She has been the City of Vienna Visiting Professor (2014), Visiting Professor at the Nuremberg Academy of Fine Arts (2013), Artist-in-residence at the Audain Gallery at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver( 2012). David Chipperfield, curator of the 2012 Venice Architecture Biennale invited Elke to bring her ground breaking exhibition The Right to Green – Hands on Urbanismcurated for the Architekturzentrum Wien (Architecture Center Vienna) to the Central Pavilion in Venice. A traveling version of the exhibition has been presented at the Aarhus Architecture School, The Heinrich Boll Foundation, the Free University of Bolzano and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Leipzig.

Brigitte Shim along with her partner, A. Howard Sutcliffe, are both principals in the Toronto based design firm Shim-Sutcliffe Architects. Shim-Sutcliffe’s built work explores the integration and interrelated scales of architecture, landscape, furniture and fittings. To date, Shim and Sutcliffe have received fourteen Governor General’s Medals and Awards for Architecture from the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada and an American Institute of Architects National Honor Award, along with many other professional accolades for their built work. Brigitte is a Professor at the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design at the University of Toronto.
